The University of Ghana over the years has been in the media at the beginning of every academic year due to its perennial accommodation deficit. After years of listening to students, old students, parents and staff of the University, we were convinced that, aside the challenging aspects of securing a bed legally for a student, some students and parents go through the pain of paying huge sums of money to other students, old students and staff to secure the “unavailable beds” for themselves or wards respectively.
Our undercover agent begins by applying and gaining admission to the University of Ghana as a student. He finalizes all processes and awaits the D-Day for the application for halls.
It’s 9:00 AM and the portal for application is opened. Fortunately for us, we couldn’t secure accommodation through the right means and had to use the other means i.e through third party and paying of bribes.
In the process, we came across a Cabal of Students who professionalize in this illegality. Whiles they claimed to get us a bed in The Commonwealth Hall should we pay GH¢ 2000, they took the money and have still failed to provide the bed as at June 2023. This cabal, not only engages in the illegal act of securing beds bf or people though unapproved means, but also dupe a significant number of their unsuspecting clients of their money.
OPERATIONS OF THE HONEY IN THE BED CABAL
- The Operation of the cabal started with an advertisement from a female student of the Dr.Hilla Limman Hall. She advertised the availability of a bed at a Traditional Hall which she could secure for any interested student at a tune of GH¢ 2000. Our further checks indicated that, she is a member of good standing in the JCR of her hall and an officer of the SRC. We call her The Advertiser.
- After our engagement with the Advertiser, she leads us another person whom she claims has direct links with people at the Tutorial Office of The said Traditional Hall. We onwardly engaged the said person and confirmed his inclusion in the operations of the cabal. Our checks indicated that, he is an old student and a former prominent official of the SRC who was formerly in Legon Hall. We call him The Protocol Man.
- After agreeing to the terms of the Protocol Man, we were instructed to make payment to the third and most important person in the cabal. Whose approval would ensure that we get the bed at the Traditional Hall in question. Payment was made to him directly through his mobile money account bearing his name. Our checks indicated that, he is a student of Legon Hall and an official of the SRC and has very close ties with the powers be in the SRC. We call him the Bloc Holder.
